Toffee fights tongue cancer
Toffee Burgan is a very special girl who has been a frequent visitor to the clinic for the past few months. Toffee was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue, a particularly nasty cancer called Squamous Cell Carcinoma.
Toffee needed a very invasive surgery to give her the best possible chance, which required removal of nearly half of her tongue. One of the lymph nodes in her neck also had to be removed after it was found that the cancer had spread. Toffee needed to stay in for several days after the procedure to try and get her eating again and on the road to recovery.
After over a week of intensive care and some time at home, Toffee finally turned the corner. Toffee's owner persisted with feeding her small meals many times a day and giving her round-the-clock care. Since then Toffee has been eating well at home, has been very happy, and continues to improve.
Cancers come in many different shapes and forms. Squamous Cell Carcinoma, as in Toffee's case, is a ‘malignant' tumour, one that has the potential to spread to other parts of the body. Thankfully, at this point Toffee seems to be completely free of the disease.
