As I was still at school when I started nursing I could only work after school, weekends and school holidays, so in 1989 when I moved with my family to Adelaide I gained a full time position in a veterinary practice where I worked for ten and a half years as a veterinary nurse. During this time I qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1991 and received an Australasian award for Excellence in Veterinary Nursing in 1996.
In 1999 I joined the team at Adelaide Animal Hospital. I worked in the capacity as Practice Manager until October 2004 when I took maternity leave for the arrival our second child. Amy Van Dyk - Veterinary Nurse
I am a Senior Qualified Veterinary Nurse. I started my first Vet Nursing job in 2002. In 2006 I decided to travel, so I went to the U.K and worked at several different clinics over there as a locum nurse, this was a great move to improve and advance my nursing skills; one of the hospitals I worked at in the UK was an Ophthalmic specialist centre. I learned a lot in the UK and got to see how they run things over there.
I have always been very interested in advancing my skills and attended almost every Continuing Education seminar and workshop I could get my hands on. I have always had a very strong interest in dog behaviour, and ever since I finished training as a Nurse have spent a lot of time reading books on behaviour and attending seminars. I started to spend more time on this before my trip overseas by going to Vicky Burton's (Delta CGC Instructor) Special Needs classes before I went overseas. Once I returned I rang Vicky up and started to become more actively involved by attending and assisting her classes again. At this point in time I also enrolled into the Delta CGC accredited course myself.
In June 2007 I started designing and running dog training classes and one on one consults for behavioural problems on my own. I have now started my own business for dog training and behavioural consulting part-time and work as a Veterinary Nurse part-time, which is when I joined the team at Adelaide Animal Hospital (Jan 2008).
I live with my Fiancé Sid (who is very supportive of me and all of my commitments) and our two beautiful fur kids, Koda and Saaba. The fur kids are both Siberian Husky's, they both came from two different breeders and I re-homed them as adults. I am very happy to join a clinic that are able to accept and be so supportive of my decisions and that are able to fit me into their team. Adelaide Animal Hospital has a great team and high standards of care, which is what makes it an enjoyable place to work.

Towards the end of my school years I decided that I wanted to become a Veterinary Nurse. I am currently studying my Certificate 11 in Animal Studies and will begin my Certificate IV in July this year. I have also begun trainee nursing shifts at work, which I am learning a lot from and enjoying.
At home I have a gorgeous Golden Retriever called Casey who is almost 8 and her two best friends, Maddy a 3 year old Domestic Short Hair and the latest addition a kitten called Taya who I recently adopted from our internal Cat Adoption Program. Veterinary nursing is a challenging but rewarding position and working at Adelaide Animal Hospital gives me the chance to learn and work in different situations allowing me to improve my nursing skills everyday.
The staff at Adelaide Animal Hospital have been very welcoming and I feel really lucky to be given the opportunity to begin my nursing career at this hospital. I am looking forward to completing my Certificate IV as well as being a part of this progressive team.
Michelle Rowe - Trainee Veterinary Nurse
I started work at Adelaide Animal Hospital at the start of February
2008. I am 17 years old and am currently studying Certificate IV in
Veterinary Nursing. I completed year 12 and Certificate 11 in Animal
Studies in 2007. I also did a short course called Introduction to
Animal Care in 2006.
I moved to Adelaide in January 2008 from a farm near Arthurton on the
Yorke Peninsula. I have lived on a farm my whole life and have always
been surrounded by animals. I always knew that I wanted to work with
animals. I realised in about year 9 that Veterinary nursing is exactly
what I wanted to do and haven't looked back.
I have many family pets and I have a beautiful
Kelpie X named Rusty. It is great and exciting to finally be working in
the industry as I am learning so much and I am extremely lucky to be
working with such a great team which practices such high standards of
Care.
Alicia Miller - Animal Caretaker
I knew my career would be with animals when I first volunteered at my local Veterinary Clinic, where I stayed for around 5 years. I moved to Adelaide in 2003 to pursue the courses Introduction to Veterinary Nursing and Certificate 11 in Animal Attending. After completing the subjects found it difficult to enter the animal industry so I gained employment and experience at a couple of other jobs until this opportunity came along. It is great to finally be working in the industry and I am looking forward to the challenges that come my way.
Beth Foreman - Animal Caretaker
I have been working at Adelaide Animal Hospital since October 2007. I am currently in my third and final year at UniSA studying a Bachelor of Applied Science: Biodiversity, Environmental and Park Management. I have always wanted to work with animals, and at the end of my studies I hope to be out in the field helping monitor and conserve Australia’s fauna and flora.
I have had many pets growing up and currently own a cat named Kyan who came into the Hospital as a stray, a hand-raised ringtail possum named Scooter, and Zac, a Kelpie cross.
Emma Cooper - Animal Caretaker
The passion and connection that I have had with animals since I was only a small child has led me to the commencement of a long anticipated and welcomed career change working at the Adelaide Animal Hospital.
At home I have a rather extensive extended family. I have 6 cats; Frodo, Monty, Millie, Henry, Leo and Wentworth. 5 of these cats either strolled into my yard in need or were found homeless and sought refuge in our home. I also have 3 dogs; Winnie, Suzie and an 11 month old Samoyed named India.
For the past year I have been working towards obtaining my certificate in Animal Care and will begin my veterinary nursing studies in 2009. I am so excited to have now turned my desire to help animals into a reality and am so lucky to have been given the opportunity by the team at the Adelaide Animal Hospital. I eagerly look forward to the challenges and amazing experiences that working with animals will bring.
Gloria Gore - Accounts Manager
I have been working at Adelaide Animal Hospital since 1998 as the Administration Manager. I am married and have two teenage boys. We also have two cats called Timmy and Tildy and a dog named Lucy, all of who came from Adelaide Animal Hospital as strays.
I like to sleep in the newspaper box, as you can see by my photo! I also really like rabbits – I love to sit and stare at them when they are in their beds. Although I’m not a lap cat, I do like a good smooch and a strong pat.
My favourite foods are dry biscuits and tuna. I love to play and my special toy is a crinkly cellophane ball but I will play with anything.
I don’t sit in the waiting room like Charlie does because I get easily scared of new places, but I love living in the hospital. I am inquisitive and like dogs too.
Charlie - Adelaide Clinic Cat
Hello, my name is Charlie but the nurses call me Charlie Nerms (I'm not sure why!).
In 1996, when I was a kitten, I was brought into the Hospital after I was hit by a car. Back then, the Hospital was called the Magill Road Vet Clinic and was in the old red brick building further up Magill Road. My pelvis was broken badly, but Dr Foreman fixed it and kept me as a clinic cat.
I love living at the Hospital. I get very scared when I have to go outside in my carry cage. I like lounging in the sun on the chairs in the waiting room and I like to trick people into thinking I am a toy when I am sleeping quietly in my basket!
I am on a strict diet because I have a sensitive stomach but I love the odd piece of yummy chicken.
I like other cats and dogs, but I am funny around German Shepherds after I got bitten by one in the waiting room a few years ago.
I am pretty quiet these days and I like to sleep a lot but sometimes I will get a burst of energy and play with my toys. I especially love to play with string.
Lola - Burnside Clinic Cat
Lola came to live with us at our Burnside Vet Clinic when she was 4 years old in 2004. She is very quiet by nature and fits into the clinic cat life with ease, although there are times when she escapes to her bedroom for some time out from the extra energetic dogs and kids.
Lola just loves her dinner and has been on a diet for as long as we can remember, which has paid off. When she came to us she weighed 9kg and is now down to a much healthier 7kg.
She also has a very busy daily schedule and likes routine. It starts by eating breakfast, scratching her claws on the mat that sits on the scales, sitting on the counter at reception, snoozing in the sunny patches that come through the windows and then eating dinner.
Lola's favourite junk food is potato chips and will try to swipe them from your hand when you're not looking. Of course she is not allowed to have them!
Lola occasionally helps us out with our blood donor program, and in return just loves sitting on a lap for a pat.
Jaffa - Burnside Clinic Cat
Jaffa was a stray cat who was part of the cat adoption program, although many people who had pets already fell in love with Jaffa. During his time with us he won over our hearts and was adopted as a clinic cat.
Jaffa is energetic and a bit of a socialite, he loves greeting anyone who comes in the door including dogs, cats and kids. Jaffa loves entertaining some of the younger boarding cats who love to play; he would play all day with them if he could. However he does have some naughty moments though. He loves to pounce on Lola knowing that she will not be impressed. Although recently Lola has started to tell him off and put him back in his place.
Jaffa also assists from time to time in our blood donor program.
