Fred - The best clinic cat in the world!

Recently the team at Prospect Road Vet Hospital had to make the hard decision to euthanase a very special member of our team - Fred the clinic cat. Many people have fond memories of Fred lounging about on the front counter, giving people a loving hand lick, smooching around cats and dogs in the waiting room, and being a great reception assistant. These were just some of the things that Fred was famous for. But the team who have known Fred for his whole life have many more stories to tell about Fred.

Goodwood Road Vet Clinic – now an Adelaide Animal Hospital

We are very excited to announce the acquisition of our fourth hospital in Goodwood Road, Cumberland Park. Don't bully the Pitbull

The recent amendment to legislation (effective 1st September 2011) regarding restricted breeds has raised many questions on the best means to identify breeds and what role veterinarians can play in this new legislation. Unfortunately the media and politics often like to seek a simple solution. There is currently no objective, scientific method of determining whether a dog is a Pitbull or Pitbull cross.

The nose that knows! Dogs detecting human lung cancer

News headlines from across the world have reported on a new study where dogs were able to detect lung cancer in humans by sniffing human breath. The research was conducted in a German hospital and reported in the European Respiratory Journal. The test involved 110 healthy people, 60 patients with lung cancer and 50 patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Each person was asked to breathe into a fleece filled tube which absorbed the smell of the person's breath.

Harmful preservatives in pet food

We thought you may be interested in a recent article published in the Sunday Mail on 17th July 2011, on added preservatives being used in pet foods that may be harmful to cats and dogs. The article highlights that companies are allowed to use the preservative, sulphur dioxide, in fresh meat products with no rules about labelling or how much can be added. One product tested by the Sunday Mail had a level of 435 times more sulphur dioxide than what was claimed on the packaging while other pet food products included the preservative without any mention on the label.

Dr Warren Foreman wins major AVA Award

At the recent Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) annual conference held here in Adelaide, Dr Warren Foreman received one of the nation's highest awards from the association. Warren received a Meritorious Service Award for his years of dedicated service to the profession.

Golden Retreivers set to play important role in North American cancer study

At a recent North American Veterinary Conference, Wayne A. Jensen, DVM, PhD, MBA, Chief Scientific Officer of Morris Animal Foundation (MAF) announced the commencement of a 13-year longitudinal veterinary study to examine canine cancer.
